The
Focsle is a newly refurbished apartment on the beachfront
of Porthmeor Beach in the center of St Ives. The interior
of the apartment reflects the building's origins as a fisherman's
loft and is of dark beams, textured white walls and polished
wood floors. The main lounge of the apartment is flooded
with light reflecting off the Atlantic swell.
The
commission was for a number of paintings to give the interior
space an atmosphere reflecting the spectacular view of breaking
surf and headlands and the close proximity of the Tate Gallery
with it's collection of contemporary art. Bright abstracts
were chosen to complement the sharp bright colours of the
Penwith peninsula. Pastel landscapes were selected to reflect
the intense natural beauty of the coast and wild moorlands
of the locality. One of the pastels is of the rocks of the
headland called the Island located a hundred yards from
the apartment. The paintings were created and in place within
a month.
